Overview and Benefits of Crowns
Dental bridges and crowns are fixed prosthetic components. Crowns are primarily used to cover a space, a damaged tooth, or to cover an implant. They can be cemented to natural teeth or to implants that replace a space where there used to be a tooth.
Additional Benefits
On the other hand, there are dental bridges, which are crowns joined and supported by two teeth or implants at the ends. Like crowns, they serve to cover the space of a single tooth or several teeth. The bridge is made up of two parts: the anchor teeth or implants (abutments) and the pontics (bridge or filling teeth).
In addition to improving appearance, bridges and crowns help align and occlude teeth. The space left by a missing tooth can cause the remaining teeth to shift, which can cause a bad bite; bridges and crowns help avoid these problems.
Finally, crowns and bridges can last for many years if placed on healthy teeth and properly made and maintained. Bridges can last up to 10 years, while individual crowns last around 15-20 years.
When is a Dental Crown Needed?
Crowns and bridges should be placed on teeth with a healthy structure and roots, or failing that, on adequately treated teeth (cavities or root canals therapies).
Here are some situations in which crowns may be recommended:
- Improve aesthetic appearance: Crowns are an excellent option when the patient wants to significantly change the shape, color or even the position of the teeth.
- Correct the bite: If you do not want to undergo treatment with braces, crowns may be the best option, since, by removing the surface of the tooth, you can work on the complete design of the smile and correct a misaligned bite.
- Strengthen or repair a severely damaged tooth: If you have some damaged, cracked or broken teeth, crowns can easily correct these problems.
- Replacing a missing tooth: Dental implants fulfill the function of replacing the root of a missing tooth, crowns serve to cover the superficial space and help restore chewing function.
Most Common Types of Crowns
Crowns can be prefabricated, or custom made in our in-house laboratory. Temporary or prefabricated crowns are made of plastic or acrylic. They can be used temporarily until a permanent crown is made. Crowns can be made of: All Metal (gold), Metal-Porcelain, Porcelain, Zirconium, Ceramic or Composite Resin. However, today we will talk about the most used in modern dentistry.
Depending on aesthetic needs, strength, available restorative space in the mouth and prices, you can choose one of the following types of crowns.
Porcelain Crown
This type of crown is often preferred by patients due to its appearance and translucency, which makes it look like natural teeth. In addition, it is considered an holistic option because it is metal-free. They are the best option for frontal teeth, highly resistant, although more fragile than metal, metal/porcelain and zirconium.
Metal-Porcelain Crown
Metal-Porcelain crowns have a great advantage, they offer the best of both worlds: the strength of metal and the appearance of porcelain crowns. They are used on both front teeth and molars. One of the disadvantages of these crowns is the dark line near the gum that corresponds to the metal inside.
Zirconium Crown
The use of zirconium in Dentistry is relatively recent. This white material gives a very natural result and, as it does not have a metallic part, it allows light to pass through. Experts recommend zirconia crowns for the most visible teeth, since these crowns are not as voluminous and thick as the previous ones.

Dental Crowns
Dental crowns, known as “caps,” are essential in restorative dentistry. These surround and protect the teeth, restoring their shape and function, preventing cavities and solving various dental problems. They are used to restore broken teeth, protect weak teeth, join parts of cracked teeth, disguise imperfections and support teeth with large fillings, as well as in anchoring dental bridges and covering implants.
A Mix of Art and Science
Each dental crown is a masterpiece, custom-made with precision to fit your dental anatomy. Using advanced materials and techniques, crowns are manufactured in our in-house laboratory, ensuring a perfect fit, delivery time, quality and aesthetics.
What is a Dental Bridge?
A bridge is placed in a space where teeth are missing and is attached to a tooth or implant. Its teeth, known as pillars, have the function of anchoring the bridge; a replacement tooth, called a pontic, is attached to the crowns that cover the abutment, like crowns, they also have different bridge material options.
Crown Placement Process
We will analyze your general and oral health, specifically the condition of your teeth. At this time, the design that best suits you will be established, according to your features and tastes. If the teeth on which the crowns will be placed have very deep cavities or some condition, we will take care of resolving this situation first.
Then, under local anesthesia in the area to be treated, we will prepare your teeth to receive the new crowns. The filing, in addition to being painless, must be quite pronounced to be able to place the adhesive and the new crown.
Next, we will take an impression of the teeth to make the cast with which the crowns will be created. Once ready, it will be sent to the laboratory area and during this process, which can last a few hours or a couple of days, the specialist will place temporary crowns to avoid the sensitivity and discomfort that dental manipulation can cause.
The second part will continue once the final prosthetics have been completed. First, we will test that the wreaths fit perfectly in size and color. If so, we will proceed to disinfect the area and finally place the crowns with definitive cement.

Differences between Veneers and Dental Crowns
If you've made it this far, you're probably curious about the differences between dental crowns and veneers. Both treatments can improve the appearance of your teeth, but there are some important factors to consider when choosing between them.
Dental Crowns
They are like covers or helmets that are placed over damaged teeth to protect and restore them. They are strong and durable, making them a great option for teeth that need a lot of work.
Veneers
They are thin sheets that cover the front of your teeth to give them a new look. They are ideal for correcting minor problems such as discoloration or chips and can make your smile look more beautiful and uniform.
Ultimately, the best treatment option for you will depend on your unique needs and goals.

FAQ Dental Crowns
With proper care, dental crowns typically last between 5 and 15 years, depending on how much care the crown receives and how well good oral hygiene practices are followed.
No, the process is usually painless. Local anesthesia numbs the tooth and surrounding area during the procedure. Discomfort or sensitivity may occur after the procedure, but it is usually minimal.
What is the difference between porcelain crowns and metal crowns?
Porcelain crowns are tooth-colored and blend seamlessly with natural teeth, making them ideal for front teeth. Metal crowns, often made of gold alloys, are more durable, making them suitable for back (molar) teeth
Can a tooth with crowns have cavities?
Yes, cavities can form at the interface between the tooth and the crown if it is not properly maintained. Good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups are very important.
Treat them as you would your natural teeth. Regular brushing, flossing and dental checkups will ensure the durability of your crown.
Same-day crowns are made with advanced technology in-house, allowing the crown to be designed, manufactured and placed in a single appointment.
Absolutely! At Ceprosi Dental, our crowns are meticulously crafted to match the shape, size and color of your natural teeth, ensuring a natural, seamless appearance.
Traditional crowns typically require two appointments: one for preparation and impression taking and one for placement of the crown. Same-day crowns are completed in a single appointment.
Yes, depending on the problem, alternatives such as inlays, caps or dental veneers may be appropriate. Talk to your dentist to determine the best solution for your dental needs.
